Orange Retro Chair

We found this wonderful retro chair at a garage sale in La Grande for two dollars! Obviously mid century modern hasn’t caught on in La Grande yet. The chair appears to be made of some sort of rubber like material. It does not appear to be plastic. If anyone could tell us more about his chair it would be appreciated. As you can see, the chair has a light film over it which may be paint, or possibly from sun exposure. If anyone knows what might have cause this, and how to clean it up, the information would be greatly appreciated. Another option we are considering is painting it. Unfortunately we don’t know what kind of paint would work on this surface. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks. |

Hi, your chair might be fiberglass, but I’m also guessing that the “film” you’re seeing is actually sun fade. I doubt there’s much you can do about it. Have you tried a swipe of polyurethane or something similar in a hidden spot? It might just refresh the finish, just as water would. DOES water make it brighter? If so, you should be able to varnish it with something then.

try simichrome polish. It says it is a metal polish but it is also a wonderful plastic polish. These chairs were usually fiberglass, and I am willing to bet this chair is too. The Simichrome should refresh the surface without damaging it. I have used it to remove a scratch on my Ipod. Good stuff.

I grew up in Oregon and now live in CA. I’m nostalgiac and jealous of all the great finds in small towns in OR.
I’m a big fan of your blog. In fact it helped inspire me to create my own, documenting our….success story? I don’t know. I’d love to hear what you think. It is heartening to learn you are a fan of our blog. We know from our Google statistics that about forty people visit our site each day, but we don’t have much of a sense of whether they like it or not. It is good to hear that you do.

You have some really cool stuff in your home. It’s fun to see how you’ve arranged things.
Looking for mid century furniture and other stuff while in rural Oregon is fun. Consignment stores, garage sales, and thrift shops are a tremendous treasure trove of inexpensive stuff. There really is the thrill of the hunt.
When it comes to controversy, doing anything with a mid century home elicits plenty of opinions. Some people are into restoring the house to how it probably appeared in the 50’s. We are more inclined to aspired to remodel to achieve the intention of mid century philosophy: simplicity, open space, and fun colors. You’ve done some great things with your home.
It is apparent you are just starting out on you blogging experience. We will be interested in watching the evolution of your mid century adventure.

Hi,
I believe your chair is a is Herman Miller eames style chair. It is probably made of Fiberglass and should be cleaned or restored according to the method appropriate for the material. They are popular items on Ebay and the bases vary. You can probably find out more about you particular one with a little web-searching. I think your site is great and have visited it several times. Nice Find! Keep up the awesome job.

This is an injection molded plastic chair, rather than the Herman Miller/ Eames fiberglass chair. I have seen some of these in thrift shops in the Denver area. They’re usually brown and listed for at least $20. So, finding a red one for just $2 is a good find! The haze is probably sun fade. Some ArmorAll (or similar automotive product) might restore the true color.

Clarice and Matt – We’re not sure what the chair is, but we do know it’s nothing fancy. What we love about it is it was extremely cheap and it fits in with the house.
